1978 Porsche 911SC Coupe jet black Following the winding two-lane blacktop that's Highway 2, up past Mt. Waterman, then downhill, we turn left on 138, fly over the whoop-de-dos before Littlerock, slow down briefly through town--always on the lookout for the black-and-whites--then turn up the volume and blend into the anonymously flowing weekday traffic on 14 North. Literally within minutes, there's Rosamond, Mojave. We're headed east on 58, past the dry lakes that make up Edwards AFB. The road seems to be endless, melding with the horizon. One hundred and eight degrees cause the desert around us to boil and blister, just like the air stream behind an F-14 at take-off. One deep breath, point and shoot, then we floor it! The black Porsche accelerates with relentless force, screaming like there's no tomorrow. Instants later, Outlaw's tach registers 6,200 rpm, the speedo needle hovers around 155 mph. The wail of the engine is almost drowned out by Rage against the Machine covering Bob Dylan's classic I don't want to work on Maggie's farm no more. Yeah, we all need to escape once in a while. Call it stress therapy, flight from boredom, adrenaline rush; call it what you want. Fact is, the Outlaw rules! After the high-speed run, we finally zigzag back down 395 for another jog over Angeles Crest Highway. We admire the car's impressive braking abilities, flawless handling and smooth 5-speed transmission. An exhilarating Thursday afternoon, and the only vehicle out-accelerating us while approaching the speed of sound was the black B-2 Stealth bomber near Edwards . . . The perfect car for ultra-quick motoring, this mysterious 911 is the embodiment of all things that are right about the World's finest sports car. First and foremost, it looks right, darn right. It's jet black. Arrow-straight lines are subtly enhanced by a set of original Carrera wheels, shod with X-treme performance PIRELLI ZR tires. Carrera front spoiler and small rear spoiler with integrated third brake light enhance the effect. Windows are expertly deep-tinted. The cabin is luxuriously equipped with supple leather seats and factory deep pile carpeting protected by thick overlays featuring embroidered Porsche crests. The dash, with its set of all-business white-on-black analog gauges, is immaculate. A leather-covered sport steering wheel and perfectly positioned 5-speed shifter are essential ingredients of the 911SC. But wait, there's more: This prime example of Zuffenhausen's finest features an updated R134a air conditioning system that keeps things cool, even on sizzling hot days in the Mojave desert. Then, there's the high-dollar sound system, the most effective unit I've experienced in a long time. The ECLIPSE CD head unit feeds signals to an AUDIO CONCEPT programmable crossover 2x6 control unit, a POWER LOGIC microprocessor-controlled multi-channel pre-amp and an INFINITY MRA-90 mobile reference amplifier. Thusly enhanced, a well-engineered 7-speaker system--including a SAS Bazooka bass tube--fills the interior with sound of incredible strength and clarity. Folding rear seats turn the 911 into a true GT car and provide plenty of space for an additional adult or two members of the U.S. Gymnasts Team. Let the sunshine in! I got so excited, almost forgot to mention the factory electric steel sunroof. A/C and a sunroof! Quite simply, it can't get any better than this, can it? Yes, it can! The ace in the hole is a bulletproof 1986 Carrera 3.2-liter engine with Air Flow Control fuel injection and Digital Motor Electronics that was professionally installed in 1993. An aftermarket performance chip doesn't really help the cold idle, but it certainly makes this 911 fly! Total power output is--on par with that of most early 930 turbos--in the 250 hp range! Engine is super clean, top to bottom; there are no unsightly oil leaks, nor any untoward noises; just pure, unadulterated Porsche magic. The car has been maintained by one of the foremost Porsche shops in the Valley and the Carrera engine's maintenance-free chain tensioners, hydraulic lifters, and computer-controlled motor management system are the ticket to worry-free supercar fun. As evidenced by the B.A.R. sticker affixed to the passenger door pillar, this is a California smog-legal engine installation. Let me explicitly state at this time that all systems, such as brakes, steering, air conditioning, lights, the UNGO anti-theft system, as well as all the gauges and switches work flawlessly. The Outlaw is ready to be driven anywhere, anytime! Nicely carpeted trunk is as well kept as the remainder of the car. Shown are books and manuals, the (partial) tool kit, and a black "bra." Outlaw's original Space Saver spare has never been on the ground. Jack and air compressor are also present and in unused condition. The vulnerable spare wheel area is free of any corrosion or accident damage; in fact, this pampered California 911 is completely rust and accident-free, guaranteed! The aforementioned, 7 and 8 inch-wide, forged FUCHS wheels are in truly exquisite condition and feature deep black spokes and highly polished rims. Superior quality PIRELLI P7000 ZR tires, 205/55/16 up front and 225/50/16 in the rear have about 75% of their rubber left to burn. Apart from a few--almost undetectable--blemishes, such as minuscule rock chips in the front fascia area, there is nothing that would take away from the Outlaw's stunning visual impact. Killer looks aside, the sum total of the Outlaw's traits elevates it into the realm of dream cars. Based on the best-built of all 911s, its enhanced attributes defy comparison. The finest Porsche components have been used to improve upon a world-class automobile; not surprisingly, the Carrera engine installation alone carried an $8,000.00 tab. N.O.S. Carrera wheels are not available at bargain prices, either, nor are the sophisticated sound system or the state-of-the-art A/C unit. Most importantly, all components have been installed with utmost attention to detail and regardless of cost. This results in a car that is virtually indistinguishable from a '89 911 Carrera.
